今日も日本の学校・英会話では習えないイギリス英語をケンブリッジ大学の本に基づいて学んでいきましょう。
①In/at/onの使い方
in が使われる表現として、
in a line, in a row, in a queue, in bed, in the sky, in the world, in the country,
in the countryside, in an office, in a department, in a picture, in a photo,
in a photograph, in a book, in a paper (=newspaper), in a magazine, in a letter
… 等があります。
in the front / in the back
- I was sitting in the back (of the car) when we crashed.
- 事故が起きた時に私は車の後方に座っていた。
in the front / back of the car と in front / back of the car の違い
in the front / back of the car 車の中の前方・後方
in front / back of the car 車の前・後
in the corner と at / on the corner の違い。
- The TV is in the corner of the room.
- この部屋の角にテレビがある。
（部屋の中の四方の角のひとつ）
- There is a small shop at / on the corner of the street.
- この通りの角に小さい店がある。
on が使われる表現として
on the left, on the right, on the left-hand side, on the right-hand side,
on the ground floor, on the first floor, on the second floor, on a map,
on a menu, on a list, on a farm … 等があります。
on は場所(river, road, coast … 等)にも使います。
- Budapest is on the (river) Danube.
- ブダペストはドナウ川の上にある。
よく使われる表現に on the way があります。
- We stopped to buy some things in a shop on the way home.
- 私たちは家に帰る途中に何か買うために店に寄った。
on the front / on the back + of + a letter, a piece of paper … 等
- I wrote the date on the back of the photo.
- 私は日付を写真の裏に書いた。
at the top (of), at the bottom (of), at the end (of)
- Write your name at the top of the page.
- ページの上部に名前を書きなさい。
- Jane’s house is at the other end of the street.
- ジェーンの家はこの通りの反対側にある
the other end は慣用表現です。
at the front / back + of + a building, theatre, group of people … 等
- The garden is at the back of the house.
- その庭園は家の後ろにある。
