今日も日本の学校・英会話では習えないイギリス英語をケンブリッジ大学の本に基づいて学んでいきましょう。
①On time and in timeとAt the end and in the endの使い方
on time 時間通り
- The 11:45 train left on time. = it left at 11:45.
- その11時45分の電車は時間通りに出発した。
on time の反対は late です。
- Be on time. Don’t be late.
- 時間通りに。遅れないでください。
in time 時間内に
- Will you be home in time for dinner? = soon enough for dinner
- 夕食に間に合うまでに家にいますか？
in time の反対は too late です。
- I got home too late to see the game on TV.
- 私が家に帰ったのはその試合をテレビで見るのに遅過ぎた。
just in time = almost too late 時間ギリギリで
- We got to the station just in time for our train.
- 私たちの電車の時間ギリギリで駅に着いた。
at the end (of … ) ( … ) の最後
at the end of month, at the end of January, at the end of the game,
at the end of the film, at the end of the course, at the end of the concert
… 等
❌in the end (of … ) とは言いません。
- At the end of the concert, everyone applauded.
- コンサートの最後に、みんな拍手した。
at the end (of … ) の反対は at the beginning (of … ) です。
❌in the beginning (of … ) とは言いません。
- I’m going away at the beginning of January.
- 1月の始まりに私は出かけます。
in the end = finally 最終的に
- We had a lot of problems with our car. We sold it in the end.
- 私たちは車にたくさんの問題があった。最終的にそれを売った。
in the end の反対は通常 at first です。
- At first we didn’t get on very well, but in the end we became good friends.
- 最初私たちはうまくいっていなかったが、最終的にいい友達になった。
