away と back の比較

away = away from home

• We’re going away on holiday today.
• 今日私たちは休暇で出かける。

away = away from a place, a parson etc.

• The woman got into her car, started the engine and drove away.
• その女性は車に乗り込み、エンジンを始動して走り去った。
• I tried to take a picture of the bird, but it flew away.
• 私は鳥の写真を撮ろうとしたが、それは飛び去りました。
• I dropped the ticket and it blew away in the wind.
• 私は切符を落としてそれは風に吹き飛ばされた。
• The police searched the house and took away a computer.
• 警察はその家を捜索してコンピューターを持ち去った。

よく使われる表現としてほかに

walk away, run away, look away … 等があります。

back = back home

• We’ll be back in three weeks.
• 私たちは3週間後に(家に)戻ってきます。

back = back to a place, a person etc.

• A: I’m going out now.
• A：私は今から出かけます。
• B: What time will you be back?
• B：あなたは何時に戻りますか？
• After eating at a restaurant, we walked back to our hotel.
• レストランで食事をした後、私たちは歩いてホテルに戻った。
• I’ve still got Jane’s keys. I forgot to give them back to her.
• 私はジェーンの鍵はまだ持っている。 私はそれらを彼女に返すのを忘れた。
• When you’ve finished with that book, can you put it back on the shelf?
• あなたがその本を読み終わったら、棚に戻してくれますか？

よく使われる表現としてほかに

go back, come back, get back, take + 何か + back … 等があります。

ほかの動詞 + away

get + away = escape, leave with difficulty

• We tried to catch the thief, but she managed to get away.
• 私たちはその泥棒を捕まえようとしたが、彼女はなんとか逃げた。

get + away + with + 何か = do something wrong without being caught

• I parked in a no-parking zone, but I got away with it. I didn’t have to pay a fine.
• 私は駐車禁止区域に駐車しましたが、罰せられないですんだ。 罰金を払う必要はなかった。

keep + away (+ from …) = don’t go near

• Keep away from the edge of the pool. You might fall in.
• プールの端から離れてください。 落ちるかもしれません。

give + 何か + away = give it to somebody else because you don’t want it any more

• ‘Did you sell your old computer?’
• あなたの古いコンピューターを売りましたか？
• ‘No, I gave it away.’
• いいえ、(ひとに)あげました。

put + 何か + away = put it in the place where it is kept, usually out of sight

• When the children had finished playing with their toys, they put them away.
• こどもたちがおもちゃで遊び終わった時、かれらはそれらを片付けた。

(過去の出来事をふたつ扱っている場合で、時間的にふたつの出来事を分けたい時に、より前の出来事に過去完了形を使います。the children had finished と過去完了形が使われているので、hey put them away の put は過去形の put です)

throw + 何か + away = put it in the rubbish

• I kept the letter, but I threw away the envelope.
• 私は手紙は取っておいたが、封筒は捨てました。

ほかの動詞 + back

wave + back, smile + back, shout + back, write + back, hit + 誰か + back

• I waved to her and she waved back.
• 私は彼女に手を振って彼女は手を振り返した。

call / phone / ring (+ 誰か) + back = return a phone call

• I can’t talk to you now. I’ll call you back in ten minutes.
• 私は今話をすることができません。 10分後に折り返し電話します。

get + back + to + 誰か = reply to them by phone etc.

• I sent him an email, but he never got back to me.
• 私は彼にメールを送ったが、彼が私に返事を送ってくることはなかった。

look + back (+ on + 何か) = think about what happened in the past

• My first job was in a travel agency. I didn’t like it very much at the time but, looking back on it, I learnt a lot and it was a very useful experience.
• 私の最初の仕事は旅行代理店だった。 当時はあまり好きではなかったが、振り返ってみると、多くのことを学んでとても有益な経験になった。

pay + back + money

• If you borrow money, you have to pay it back.
• もしお金を借りるなら、それを返さなければいけない。

pay + 誰か + back

• Thanks for lending me the money. I’ll pay you back next week.
• 私にお金を貸してくれてありがとう。 来週にお金を返します。
