bring + up + a topic etc. = introduce it in a conversation

• I don’t want to hear any more about this matter. Please don’t bring it up again.
• 私はこの問題についてこれ以上聞きたくありません。 もうそれを持ち出さないでください。

come + up = be introduced in a conversation

• Some interesting points came up in our discussion yesterday.
• 昨日の私たちの討論で興味深い点がいくつか出てきた。

come + up + with + an idea, a suggestion etc. = produce an idea

• Sarah is very creative. She’s always coming up with new ideas.
• サラはとても創造的だ。 彼女はいつも新しい考えを思いついている。

make + 何か + up = invent something that is not true

• What Kevin told you about himself wasn’t true. He made it all up.
• ケビンが彼自身についてあなたに言ったことは真実ではなかった。 彼はそれをすべて作り上げた。

cheer + up = be happier

• You look so sad! Cheer up!
• あなたは悲しそう！元気出して！

cheer + 誰か + up = make somebody feel happier

• Helen is depressed at the moment. What can we do to cheer her up?

 = save money to buy something

• Dan is saving up for a trip around the world.

clear + up = become bright (for weather)

• It was raining when I got up, but it clear up later.
• 私が起きた時には雨が降っていたが、後で晴れた。

blow + up = explode

• The engine caught fire and blew up.
• エンジンが発火し爆発した。

blow + 何か + up = destroy it with a bomb etc.

• The bridge was blown up during the war.
• その橋は戦争中に爆破された。

tear + 何か + up = tear it into pieces

• I didn’t read the letter. I just tore it up and threw it away.
• 私はその手紙を読まなかった。 私はただそれを引き裂いて捨てた。

beat + 誰か + up = hit someone repeatedly so that they are badly hurt

• A friend of mine was attacked and beaten up a few days ago. He was badly hurt and had to go to hospital.
• 数日前に私の友達のひとりが襲われて叩きのめされた。 彼は大怪我をして病院に行かなければならなかった。

break + up / split + up (+ with + 誰か) = separate

• I’m surprised to hear that Sue and Paul have split up. They seemed very happy together.

do + up + a coat, a shoelace, buttons etc. = fasten, tie etc.

• It’s quite cold. Do up your coat before you go out.
• とても寒い。 外出する前に上着を着なさい。

look + 何か + up + in + a dictionary, encyclopaedia etc.

• If you don’t know the meaning of a word, you can look it up in a dictionary.
• 言葉の意味がわからない場合は、辞書で調べることができます。

put + up + with + 何か = tolerate it

• We live on a busy road, so we have to put up with a lot of noise from the traffic.
• 私たちは往来の多い道路に住んでいるので交通からの多くの騒音に我慢しなければならない。

hold + up + a person, a plan etc. = delay

• Don’t wait for me. I don’t want to hold you up.
• 私を待たないでください。あなたを送れさせたくない。
• Plans to build a new factory have been held up because of the company’s financial problems.
• 新しい工場を建設する計画は会社の財政の問題のため延期された。

mix + up + ひと・物, get + ひと・物 + mixed + up = you think one is the other

• The two brothers look very similar. Many people mix them up / get them mixed up.
• このふたりの兄弟はとても似ています。 多くのひとはかれらを間違える。
