今日も日本の学校・英会話では習えないイギリス英語をケンブリッジ大学の本に基づいて学んでいきましょう。
①句動詞 + upの使い方
go + up, come + up, walk + up (+ to …) = approach
- A man came up to me in the street and asked me for money.
- 男が通りで私に近づいて私にお金を求めた。
catch + up (+ with + 誰か), catch + 誰か + up = move faster than somebody in front of you so you can reach them
- I’m not ready to go yet. You go on and I’ll catch up with you / catch you up.
- 私はまだ行く準備ができていません。 あなたは(先に)行って私はあなたに追いつくでしょう。
keep + up (+ with + 誰か) = continue at the same speed or level
- You’re walking too fast. I can’t keep up (with you).
- あなたは歩くのが速すぎます。 私はついていくことができません。
- You’re doing well. Keep it up!
- あなたはよくやってます。 そのまま続けて！
set + up + an organisation(英) / organization(米), a business, a system, a website etc. = start it
- The government has set up a committee to investigate the problem.
- 政府は問題を調査するための委員会を設置した。
take + up + a hobby, a sport, an activity, etc. = start doing it
- Laura took up photography a few years ago. She takes really good pictures.
- ローラは数年前に写真を始めた。 彼女は本当に良い写真を撮る。
fix + up + a meeting etc. = arrange it
- We’ve fixed up a meeting for next Monday.
- 私たちは来週の月曜日に会議を取り決めた。
grow + up = become an adult
- Ann was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Australia.
- アンは香港で生まれたがオーストラリアで育った。
bring + up + a child = raise, look after a child
- Her parents died when she was a child and she was brought up by her grandmother.
- 彼女の子供の頃に両親は亡くなったので彼女は祖母に育てられました。
clean + up, clear + up, tidy + up + 何か = make it clean, tidy etc.
- Look at this mess! Who’s going to tidy up / tidy it up?
- この散らかりを見て！ 誰が片付けるの？
wash + up = wash the plates, dishes etc. after a meal
- I hate washing up. = I hate doing the washing-up.
- 私は食器洗いをするのが嫌いだ。
イギリス英語では washing-up は食器や調理器具を洗うという意味になります。
end + up + 場所
- There was a fight in the street and three men ended up in hospital.
- 通りで喧嘩があった。3人の男性が病院に運ばれた。
(= that’s what happened to these men in the end)
(喧嘩の結果、喧嘩をしていた3人の男性が病院に運ばれる結果になって終わった)
end + up + 動名詞 + 何か
- I couldn’t find a hotel and ended up sleeping on a bench at the station.
- 私はホテルが見つけられなかったので駅のベンチで寝ることになった。
(= that’s what happened to me in the end)
(ホテルが見つけられなかった結果として駅のベンチで寝ることになった)
make + up + 何か
- Children under 16 make up half the population of the city.
- 16歳未満のこども(の数は)は市の人口の半分だ。
(= half of the population are children under 16)
be動詞 + made + up + of + 何か
- Air is made up of mainly of nitrogen and oxygen. = Air consists mainly of nitrogen and oxygen.
- 空気は主に窒素と酸素で構成されている。
take + up + space or time = use space or time
- Most of the space in the room was taken up by a large table.
- 部屋の空間の大部分は大きなテーブルに使われていた。
turn + up / show + up = arrive, appear
- We arranged to meet David last night, but he didn’t turn up.
- 私たちは昨夜デイビッドに会うことにしたが、彼は現れなかった。
use + 何か + up = use all of it so that nothing is left
- I’m going to make some soup. We have a lot of vegetables and I want to use them up.
- 私はスープをつくるつもりです。私たちは野菜がたくさんあるので使い切りたいです。
