今日も日本の学校・英会話では習えないイギリス英語をケンブリッジ大学の本に基づいて学んでいきましょう。
①To/at/in/intoの使い方
inの使い方
in the rain, in the sun, in the shade, in the dark, in bad weather … 等
- We sat in the shade. It was too hot to sit in the sun.
- 私たちは日陰に座った。ひなたに座るのは暑過ぎた。
write + in ink, in pen, in pencil, in words, in figures, in capital letters … 等
- When you do the exam, you’re not allowed to write in pencil.
- 試験を受ける時は、鉛筆で書くことは許可されていない。
- Please write your name in capital letters.
- あなたの名前を大文字で書いてください。
be / fall + in love (+ with + ひと)
- They’re very happy together. They’re in love.
- かれらは一緒にいてとても幸せだ。かれらは恋している。
in (my) opinion
- In my opinion, the movie wasn’t very good.
- 私の意見では、この映画はとてもいいというわけではなかった。
onの使い方
on TV, on television, on the radio … 等
- I didn’t watch the news on television, but I heard it on the radio.
- そのニュースをテレビでは見なかったが、ラジオで聞いた。
on the phone
- I’ve never met her, but I’ve spoken to her on the phone a few times.
- 私は彼女に会ったことはないが、電話で話したことが数回ある。
be / go + on strike
- There are no trains today. The drivers are on strike.
- 今日は電車がない。運転士がストライクしている。
be / go + on diet
- I’ve put on a lot of weight. I’ll have to go on a diet.
- 私はかなり太った。ダイエットする必要があるでしょう。
be + on fire
- Look! That car is on fire.
- 見て！あの車が燃えている。
on the whole = in general
- Sometimes I have problems at work, but on the whole I enjoy my job.
- 時々は仕事に問題を抱えるが、大体私は仕事を楽しんでいる。
on purpose = intentionally
- I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to annoy you. I didn’t do it on purpose.
- すみません。あなたを困らせるつもりではありませんでした。わざとしたわけではありません。
be / go + on holiday, on business, on a trip, on a tour, on a cruise … 等
- I’m going on holiday next week.
- 私は来週から休みだ。
よく使われる表現として
go to + 場所 + for + a holiday, 所有格 + holiday(s)
- Steve has gone to France for a holiday.
- スティーブは休日にフランスに行った。
atの使い方
at + age of + 数字, at + 数字 + miles an hour, at + 数字 degrees … 等
- Tracy left school at 16. = Tracy left school at age of 16.
- トレーシーは16歳で学校を出た。
leave の過去形の left には退学という意味もありますが、この文では卒業したという意味だと思います。
- The train was travelling(英) / traveling(米) at 120 miles an hour.
- この電車は時速120マイルで移動する。
- Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
- 水は摂氏100度で沸騰する。
